Part of Spirit

The Part of Spirit — also called Pars Spiritus or Lot of Spirit — is the counterpart to the Part of Fortune. Where the Part of Fortune shows where luck flows to you, the Part of Spirit shows what you actively create. Where the Part of Fortune represents Moon nature — receiving, physical, material — the Part of Spirit represents Sun nature — willful, mental, acting. Together they form a pair that captures the fundamental dynamic of life: what you receive and what you do.

The calculation is the reversal of the Part of Fortune: For day births, Ascendant plus Sun minus Moon; for night births, Ascendant plus Moon minus Sun. The result is a point in the zodiac that synthesizes your willful side — where you actively express yourself, where your conscious striving leads, what you create with intention.

The Hellenistic Context

In Hellenistic astrology, the Part of Spirit was as important as the Part of Fortune, but for different themes. While the Part of Fortune stood for body, health, and material well-being, the Part of Spirit represented the soul, intellect, and spiritual striving. It was considered a significator for conscious life direction, for what one pursues with intention, as opposed to what happens to one.

The Arabic name, from which our term "Arabic Part" comes, refers to this mental aspect. The Arabic astrologers, who preserved and developed the Hellenistic heritage, emphasized the Part of Spirit as an indicator of intention, will, and mental clarity. It shows where you don't react, but act.

The Contrast to the Part of Fortune

The Part of Fortune and the Part of Spirit are a polar pair. The Part of Fortune is lunar: it shows what flows to you, where you receive, what goes well without your effort. The Part of Spirit is solar: it shows what you consciously create, where you take initiative, what you want.

Imagine the Part of Fortune as a meadow where you can lie down and the sun warms you. The Part of Spirit is the direction you set off in when you get up — your path, your goal, your mission. The Part of Fortune is passive well-being; the Part of Spirit is active striving.

Some people have Part of Fortune and Part of Spirit in the same sign or house. For them, receiving and acting flow together — what comes to them is also what they want. Others have them in opposition or square. For them, there's tension: What goes well isn't necessarily what they consciously strive for. The art lies in integrating both.

The Part of Spirit Through the Signs

The sign shows what your conscious striving looks like. Part of Spirit in Aries: You strive for independence, initiative, pioneering. Your will is quick, impulsive, directed at new beginnings. You create through action, through seizing initiative.

Part of Spirit in Scorpio: You strive for depth, transformation, truth. Your will is intense, penetrating, directed at the essential. You create through transformation, through intensity, through exploring the hidden.

Part of Spirit in Sagittarius: You strive for meaning, adventure, wisdom. Your will is expansive, idealistic, directed at the grand. You create through visions, through exploration, through teaching.

Part of Spirit in Capricorn: You strive for achievement, structure, long-term success. Your will is disciplined, ambitious, directed at results. You create through perseverance, through systematic work, through building.

Part of Spirit in Aquarius: You strive for freedom, uniqueness, progress. Your will is unconventional, future-oriented, directed at the collective. You create through innovation, through rebellion, through community.

Part of Spirit in Pisces: You strive for transcendence, connection, dissolution of boundaries. Your will is spiritual, compassionate, directed at the whole. You create through devotion, through art, through selfless service.

The Part of Spirit in the Houses

The house shows in which life area your conscious striving is most strongly activated. Part of Spirit in the 1st house: Your will is directed at self-development, personal alignment, shaping your identity. You strive to become yourself.

Part of Spirit in the 2nd house: Your will is directed at resources, self-worth, material security. You strive to own or create something of value.

Part of Spirit in the 3rd house: Your will is directed at communication, learning, local connections. You strive to learn, teach, connect.

Part of Spirit in the 4th house: Your will is directed at home, family, roots. You strive to create a foundation, to be emotionally rooted.

Part of Spirit in the 5th house: Your will is directed at creativity, self-expression, pleasure. You strive to create, play, experience joy.

Part of Spirit in the 6th house: Your will is directed at work, service, health. You strive to be useful, contribute, improve.

Part of Spirit in the 7th house: Your will is directed at partnership, collaboration, significant others. You strive to find yourself in the mirror of the other.

Part of Spirit in the 8th house: Your will is directed at transformation, shared resources, depth. You strive to transform, grow through crisis.

Part of Spirit in the 9th house: Your will is directed at meaning, higher education, adventure. You strive to understand the world, expand horizons.

Part of Spirit in the 10th house: Your will is directed at career, public role, achievement. You strive to accomplish something recognized.

Part of Spirit in the 11th house: Your will is directed at community, future, ideals. You strive to be part of something larger.

Part of Spirit in the 12th house: Your will is directed at the invisible, spiritual, transcendent. You strive to work beyond ego.

The Ruler of the Part of Spirit

As with the Part of Fortune, the ruler of the Part of Spirit is decisive. The planet that rules the sign in which the Part of Spirit falls modifies the entire picture. A strong ruler — in domicile, exaltation, well-aspected — gives your will power and clarity. A weak ruler can indicate obstacles, a will that struggles to assert itself, or the need to work more consciously on your intention.

The house of the ruler shows where the energy for your striving comes from. Part of Spirit in the 9th house, ruler in the 3rd house: Your striving for meaning (9th house) is fed by everyday communication and learning (3rd house).

Integrating Both Points

True wisdom lies in integrating Part of Fortune and Part of Spirit. Both are part of a whole. The Part of Fortune without Part of Spirit is passive receiving without own direction. The Part of Spirit without Part of Fortune is striving without grounding, will without well-being.

The questions both together ask: Where does it flow to you, and where do you strive? How can both work together? If they're in the same sign or house, the answer is simple. If they're in tension, the task is to honor both: receiving and acting, fortune and will, Moon and Sun in you.

The Part of Spirit in Practice

Practically used, the Part of Spirit shows where conscious effort pays off. Unlike the Part of Fortune, which points to natural flow, the Part of Spirit shows where you should actively invest. It's less a promise than a commission: Here lies your intention. Here you can create something.

The Part of Spirit can also show where you want too much, where striving turns into tension, where will blocks flow. The challenge is balance: Enough will to create, but not so much that you fight life's flow.

The Spiritual Dimension

The name "Part of Spirit" refers to the spiritual dimension. In Hellenistic philosophy, spirit (nous) was the highest principle — what connects us to the divine. The Part of Spirit can show where your soul strives, what your deepest will is, beyond ego and surface. It's a compass for what you really want — not what you think you want.

Working with the Part of Spirit is therefore also spiritual work: clarifying your wanting, sharpening your intention, recognizing the difference between real striving and mere reaction. When you know what you really want, life aligns differently. The Part of Spirit shows the direction.
