Opposition

The opposition is astrology's great mirror. At 180 degrees, two planets stand at the maximum possible distance from each other — directly across the zodiac wheel, face to face, eyeing each other across an unbridgeable divide. This is not the blind fusion of conjunction, where energies merge without awareness. This is full consciousness of the other, and with that consciousness comes the central drama of the opposition: projection.

When you look at what opposes you, you see yourself reflected back — but reversed, like a mirror image. The opposition reveals what we cannot easily see in ourselves, what we have externalized, what we have decided is not me and therefore must be out there. The people you attract are showing you something about yourself. Fifth, find the shared ground. The initial experience is fragmentation — the sense that you contain two incompatible forces, or that what you need is somehow outside yourself. The opposition uses a generous orb because its energy is broad and fundamental. The standard orb is 8 degrees. Within 3 degrees, the opposition is unmistakable — the pull between the planets is constant and central to the chart. From 3-8 degrees, it remains significant but less dominating. Beyond 8 degrees, the opposition effect weakens, though orbs up to 10 degrees may be allowed when the Sun or Moon is involved. In aspect patterns like the T-square and Grand Cross, even slightly wide oppositions participate meaningfully because the patterns geometry amplifies them.

Applying oppositions are building toward exactitude — the tension is intensifying, the confrontation approaching. There is often a sense of anticipation, of something coming to a head. Separating oppositions have passed their peak and are now integrating the experience. The confrontation has occurred; now comes the work of understanding what was revealed. In transits, applying oppositions deserve careful attention as they indicate incoming challenges that require conscious navigation. Once exact, the transit often correlates with a specific event, meeting, or realization. As it separates, the experience is digested and integrated.

The most common misconception about oppositions is that they are simply bad — a source of conflict with no redeeming value. In reality, oppositions are not inherently negative. They create awareness and polarity, which can manifest as conflict but also as dynamic balance. Another misconception is that oppositions always play out through external relationships. While oppositions often do manifest through others, they can also be entirely internal — an inner dialogue between competing needs. Finally, many believe that oppositions cannot be resolved. They cannot be eliminated, true — the 180 degree angle is permanent. But they can be integrated, managed, and eventually experienced as enriching rather than depleting.
